  • AN AUTHOR’S FRAGRANCE IS A COLLECTIVE MASTERPIECE: THE HUMAN JOURNEY BEHIND EVERY ONE OF MY CREATIONS

On my workbench there is always a notebook filled with formulas, percentages, and technical annotations. At the very beginning, a fragrance is exactly that: an idea committed to paper, waiting to take shape.

Popular imagination often lingers on the image of the solitary perfumer. The reality behind the scenes tells a very different story. It is something I have known ever since my years at ISIPCA in Versailles: no formula, however precise or inspired, can complete this journey alone.

A fragrance is, instead, the result of a profoundly collaborative process—an intricate weave of hands, perspectives, and destinies moving in harmony.

Claudia Scattolini Extrait de Parfum

It is precisely this collective effort that gives a fragrance its soul. Without it, what we create would remain nothing more than a rigorous scientific exercise.

Transforming an olfactory concept into a finished fragrance ready for the consumer requires the expertise of an entire team of professionals. An Extrait de Parfum is never the work of a single mind; it is a shared journey nourished by human relationships, where every individual contributes a fragment of the beauty ultimately captured inside the bottle.

To truly understand how much life, dedication, and craftsmanship lie behind every creation, let us take this journey backwards.

Growers and Harvesters: the guardians of nature

The first chapter belongs to nature itself.

Growers and harvesters are the true custodians of raw materials. They are men and women who work in harmony with the slow rhythms of the seasons, who know the exact hour of the morning when a rose should be picked, when lavender reaches its finest aromatic expression, or how gently a citrus peel must be handled to preserve its original freshness.

Without their daily dedication, patience, and profound connection to the land, I would never have access to the vibrant essential oils and exceptional raw materials that form the very soul of my formulas.

Extraction and Distillation Laboratories

The journey then passes into the hands of extraction and distillation laboratories.

This is where my scientific background and my degree in Pharmacy find their natural expression, engaging in a continuous dialogue with technology and chemistry.

Modern extraction techniques allow us to isolate aromatic molecules while preserving their integrity and respecting the intrinsic character of the raw material.

Working closely with these specialists—fine-tuning distillation parameters or evaluating the yield and quality of an essential oil—is one of the most fascinating aspects of my profession. It is the precise moment where artisanal craftsmanship meets the rigor of physics and chemistry.

Without their technical expertise, my artistic vision would remain nothing more than an abstract idea.

The Heart of Creation: Formulation

Long before any manufacturing process begins, every fragrance is born through careful design.

Every project starts with a brief—a document defining both the artistic vision and the commercial objectives of the fragrance.

For my own collection, this framework originates from complete creative freedom. When I develop a fragrance for a brand or a company, however, it becomes a highly structured set of parameters encompassing brand identity, market positioning, target audience, and distribution channels.

Within these strategic boundaries begins my work.

Translating an idea into a formula means selecting and balancing raw materials with mathematical precision, determining exact concentrations while anticipating the molecular interactions between each ingredient.

This initial phase is the only part of the entire process that I carry out entirely alone. It is the architectural framework of the fragrance—the irreplaceable formula from which the concentrated perfume will later be produced.

Design and the Pursuit of Detail

Once the formula has reached its perfect balance in my atelier and the composition is complete, the fragrance continues its journey toward its aesthetic identity.

To become an object that can be experienced, treasured, and remembered, a fragrance requires a physical form that faithfully reflects its character.

This is where packaging designers, paper engineers, and master printers become essential collaborators.

From the development of graphic patterns to the selection of labels and materials capable of conveying the right tactile sensation, every visual and material element contributes to the narrative.

The packaging becomes the natural extension of the fragrance itself—designed to speak to the senses before the perfume is even worn.

Translating a Fragrance: Communication and Press Relations

There is another decisive stage: telling the story of a fragrance through words and images before it is ever experienced through smell.

This is an act of translation.

For this reason, I collaborate closely with photographers, copywriters, and communication specialists—professionals capable of capturing the identity of a formula and transforming it into a coherent visual and editorial narrative.

Alongside them, the work of the press office becomes equally essential, building relationships with journalists and specialized media to ensure that the philosophy behind each project reaches the public with clarity, consistency, and authority.

Without this work of interpretation and communication, the idea that gave birth to the fragrance would never take its first step into the world.

The true ambassadors: artistic perfumery boutiques throughout Italy

This brings us to what I do not consider the final link in a commercial chain, but rather the most meaningful and sacred stage of the entire journey.

My fragrances are entrusted to artistic perfumeries and carefully selected boutiques throughout Italy—places of excellence that choose to represent my work because they genuinely believe in it.

Each boutique has its own identity and complete freedom of selection. Knowing that they have chosen to welcome my creations into their collections because they resonate with the sensibilities of their clientele is, for me, the greatest recognition I could receive.

Those who curate these spaces are not searching for products to display.

They are searching for projects they genuinely believe in.

Having freely chosen to include my brand in their collections, the fragrance consultants who welcome you into their boutiques become the true interpreters of my work.

They listen to you. They understand your emotions.

They guide you patiently through each olfactory accord, respecting the intimate time your skin needs for a fragrance to unfold and reveal its true character.

Without their sensitivity and their ability to narrate the story behind every composition, all the work carried out in the fields and laboratories would remain silent.

They are the ones who give each fragrance its voice at the very moment you experience it.

When you wear one of my creations, you are not simply wearing a manufactured product. You are wearing a chain of human stories: the hands of the grower, the precision of the scientist, the sensitivity of the designer, the identity of the artistic perfumery that carefully selected it for you, and, finally, my heart.
