The Fascination of Ambergris: A Gift from the Sea

There are days when life surprises us through entirely unexpected conversations. This is how the spontaneous connection between my olfactory world and the writing of author Mauro Zampi began: with a pleasant, informal conversation and a natural meeting of minds.

Mauro Zampi. Aleanbar: Il tesoro di Corralejo

Talking about perfumes, notes and stories naturally led me to share what I know about one of the most fascinating and, at the same time, mysterious materials in my profession: ambergris. From this impromptu exchange between two professionals came a wonderful convergence of ideas, which Mauro embraced with remarkable sensitivity and elegance, weaving them into the pages of his latest novel, Aleanbar: Il tesoro di Corralejo.

I was then deeply moved to discover that the author had chosen to mark this mutual appreciation by dedicating the book to me, with an affectionate “To Claudia” printed on the opening page.

The novel unfolds as a compelling adventure, shaped by a profound respect for the ocean and the protection of its creatures, with this extraordinary “floating gold” at the heart of the story.

Ambergris has nothing to do with exploitation. It is a true biological wonder: an organic substance produced by a very small number of sperm whales, which can travel through the ocean for a long time before eventually washing ashore with the currents, where it may be found without interfering with the animal or the marine environment.

In perfumery, it represents a raw material of extraordinary refinement. Beyond its ability to act as a fixative, enhancing the persistence of a fragrance on the skin, it possesses a unique olfactory profile: complex, enveloping and deeply evocative.

It is an emotion I know well, one that takes me back to my very first memory of amber. I was in an ancient bazaar, surrounded by countless spices and colourful fabrics, when a warm, profound scent suddenly enveloped me like a familiar embrace. From that moment on, amber became a constant companion on my olfactory journey.

It was from this deep connection with the material that Amber Extrait de Parfum was born. With this creation, I wanted to go beyond the sensory pleasure of perfume as a purely aesthetic gesture, turning it instead into an invitation to travel and to allow the mind to rest.

At its heart, amber reveals its full complexity: its warm notes blend with the sweetness of honey and the woody nuances of cedarwood and sandalwood, creating an olfactory cloud in which to surrender, pause and rediscover our natural inclination towards inner listening.

Mauro Zampi has been remarkable in translating all of this with great narrative sensitivity, avoiding the risk of becoming overly explanatory and instead transforming technical and scientific details into literary suggestion.

It has been truly inspiring to intertwine the tangible, precise nature of my work as a fragrance creator with his sensitivity as a writer. Bringing olfactory culture into a novel with such subtlety has been a genuine meeting of minds, and a different way of showing how the story of raw materials can be transformed into living emotion.

Aleanbar: Il tesoro di Corralejo is an invitation to listen to the stories held by the sea. It is a book I am delighted to share with anyone who loves to travel through beauty, nature and the most intimate nuances of the olfactory world.
