THE POWER OF SCENT.

How Female Sensitivity Enhances Fragrance Creation.

Perfume and Femininity: A Deep Connection.

Women have always had a special relationship with the world of perfumes. Since ancient times, natural fragrances and aromatic blends have been used to enhance beauty, attract attention and celebrate special occasions.

Today science offers us a fascinating explanation for this deep connection: women possess a naturally more developed sense of smell compared to men.

Nature and Science: Confirming Ancient Wisdom.

Various scientific studies in recent years have confirmed what many ancestral cultures already knew: women have a greater density of olfactory neurons in their brain, dedicated to processing scents.

This means that women can perceive a wide range of fragrances with greater intensity and precision than men. They can distinguish subtle aromatic nuances, recognize and remember scents over time and even identify the most delicate ones.

An Evolutionary Advantage That Becomes an Opportunity.

This biological predisposition has its roots in human evolution. In ancestral societies, the ability to discern scents was crucial for survival: women, often responsible for gathering food and caring for offspring, needed to identify dangers, recognize nutritious foods, and perceive important signals for family health.

Women Perfumers: A New Era of Creativity.

Today this superior olfactory sensitivity translates into a competitive advantage in the workplace, particularly in sectors like perfumery, which were once dominated by men.

Female perfumers, with their innate ability to perceive and appreciate aromatic nuances, are revolutionizing the world of fragrances, creating complex, refined scents capable of satisfying the most discerning tastes.

Women Icons in the World of Perfumery.

Now it’s essential to dedicate a brief paragraph to some of the greatest icons in this field who have contributed to leaving an immortal olfactory mark.

Let’s start with a special woman who, just like me, has always loved roses: Sophia Grojsman, a visionary who began changing the rules of perfumery in the 1970s with her unmistakable signature: first with Estée Lauder’s White Linen in 1977 and later with Yves Saint Laurent’s Paris. A queen who transformed her passion for flowers and nature into a recognizable distinctive feature.

What does the name Elsa Schiaparelli tell you? A visionary pioneer of style who revolutionized aesthetic and stylistic norms with her irreverent creations. In 1937, she shook the public with her perfume Shocking, the first fragrance to use a female body for its bottle and launch the shocking pink color, also known as Schiaparelli pink.

A woman who seems to have destiny written in her DNA is Céline Ellena. Daughter of Jean-Claude Ellena, one of the world’s most renowned master perfumers and my teacher at ISIPCA. After studying at the prestigious ISIPCA in Versailles and holding prestigious roles for various perfume companies, she created highly appreciated scents for The Different Company, a cult niche fragrance house. Her story speaks not only of family encouragement but of an innate acute sense of smell, cultivated with dedication, study, and olfactory skill.

I conclude with the story of Patricia de Nicolai, my teacher at ISIPCA, the perfumery school in Paris. A descendant of the Guerlain family, she was born breathing Shalimar and Mitsouko. Despite her origins, she never had an easy career. At the time, perfumery was an exclusively male profession. Yet, she managed to start her career as a nose and at only 31 years old, she won the National Young Perfumers’ Prize with her creation Number One. Among other achievements, she was the first woman to direct the Osmothèque, the perfume museum at ISIPCA in Versailles.

Empowerment and Innovation: The Scent of the Future.

The massive entry of women into the world of perfumery not only brings greater diversity and inclusion, but also acts as a driving force for innovation and creativity. Female sensitivity, combined with a wealth of knowledge and technical skills, leads to new olfactory interpretations, novel combinations of essences, and unique and engaging sensory experiences.

A Future Scented with Female Successes.

The superior olfactory sensitivity of women is not just a biological fact but a powerful tool for the affirmation and valorization of women in traditionally male sectors.

Leveraging this innate talent means not only creating increasingly beautiful and evocative fragrances but also building a more inclusive future rich in opportunities for women in all fields.

My goal as a nose and as a woman is to become an olfactory ambassador of an ever more female power.
